Mattawan vs Portage Northern

ToddWellsHeadShotA great match on a fine sunny afternoon.  The mighty  Huskies dominated the game winning 2-0.  Goals by Steph Scafaria and Emily Juzwiak with an assist from Catherine Willoughby.  Liz Kimmel made 2 saves.

“Mattawan was defending really well, so it took us about 20 minutes to break them down,” Portage Northern coach Todd Wells said. “Tonight, everybody contributed which is always nice to see.

“We always stress that no matter what night it is, you may be called on to do a job. That’s important to me.”

MLIVE   Mistake in the article “The win came after Portage Northern topped Mattawan on Monday.”  That is incorrect – Portage Northern defeated Portage Central Monday.

Friday May 9th is Senior night at home against Hackett so come out and support your lady Huskies.

Crayons 4 Kids

Wednesday’s May 7, 2014 home game versus Mattawan is Youth night. One of the things we are doing is taking donations for Crayons 4 Kids, so hopefully everyone can plan to bring crayons and/or coloring books as a donation.  . They accept any new crayon type items and/or coloring or activity books. This cause was started by 2 Portage Northern students so it is another great way to support our school and its students.

Portage Northern Vs Caledonia

pn2009soccerlogo-2The ladies of Portage Northern lost a tough one today amidst a rainy morning 0-1 in Caledonia.  Some excellent goal keeping on both sides kept the score nil until a late Caledonia corner kick.  A scrum developed in front of the goal and the ball snuck in.  The ladies will face the Portage Central Mustangs across town on Monday.  Funny thing was PC had a scout watching PN play today.  Scouts or no scouts this should be a huge win for PN hopefully with some normal sunny and warm soccer weather.  #pnsoccer

“Northern had the ball in our end, but our defense was up to the task,” Sanxter said. “They’ve been together for some time, and they put pressure on the ball.”Sanxter credited defenders Bush, Natalie Avery, Dani McCarty and Olivia Clipfell.  Wells was also impressed by Caledonia’s defending.  “Their defending was fantastic,” he said. “They’re well coached. We were pretty limited in terms of our offense.  “But I don’t think they had great chances either. We defended well also.”  Portage Northern plays Portage Central on Monday.  “It’s obviously a huge rivalry game,” Wells said. “We’re just looking forward to playing with some emotion and some urgency. I’m hoping that both teams play their best and that it’s a great game.”

St. Joseph’s Jodie Kirschner scored a goal in the 24th minute of the second half, the only goal of the game, to give the Bears a 1-0 victory over visiting Portage Northern on Wednesday.

Kirschner’s goal came off a corner kick. The ball was played into a scrum, and bounced off Kirschner’s shinguard and into the goal for the game-winner.

Portage Northern goalie Liz Kimmel made nine saves to keep the game close.

“It was one of those rainy-night, muddy goals that happen sometimes,” Portage Northern coach Todd Wells said. “They controlled the first half, but I thought we had the run of play in the second.

“The shots were pretty even, and it was just a great battle.”
